The spiked beak of the hounskull (pig-face) bascinet can be seen as an abstraction from the snout of a warthog, whose tusks make its skull a living helmet. Warthog is further protected by “metal” strips, echoing the combs on medieval helms. Like the steel ridges on the body of Gormley’s Angel of the North, these follow the contours of Warthog’s head.
