H61 W78cm. Glazed stoneware
Inspired by the ubiquitous three mallards in flight of the 1950s, whose purpose, like that of most women then, was to decorate the home. Seemingly free, they were firmly kept in place. I extended this image to a blue and gold macaw. Admired for its beautiful plumage, it is often kept as a pet, valued for its willingness to perform in response to praise and treats. Although it can talk, the parrot can only reiterate what it’s been told. Are women still similarly trapped, juggling home, family and career, to maintain a lifestyle dictated by clever marketing rather than finding inner fulfilment?
