Ravished
H30xW37cm; Polished earthenware
Inspired by Giacometti’s representations of violated women, in particular Man and woman, 1928-9. I adapted this idea to a place setting: the fusion of basic human needs to eat and to reproduce interpreted in the language of form. The woman is on her back, totally passive and powerless against the penetrating knife and rampant clawed fork. Rather than being separate, the cutlery is joined to the female torso, depicting the forced union. Alas, the fork was rendered less threatening by (fortunately slight) slumping in the firing.
