The Tree of Life is an ancient image, representing the continuity of life. The roots are planted in the underworld, the trunk rises from the earth, the branches reach to the heavens. Although the focus is on the now, there is a sinister future hovering. The bird perches alert among the sleeping leaves; already one has unfurled its malevolent eye. Inspired by Klimt’s Stoclet frieze, 1909.
