Man has long sought to make the war elephant even more imposing, whether to intimidate enemy armies or impress onlookers. The elephant armour at Leeds Royal Armouries comprises vertical strips of sheet metal, some patterned with hammered animal designs. I moved away from a mask that followed the shape of the head by adapting the overlapping horizontal strips on the body armour of Roman legionaries. But although decked in armour, Bejewelled is as colourful as any ceremonial elephant. Her protective strips are decorated with patterns of coloured glass discs and, cocking a snook at other party animals, she sports 64 earrings.
